AIEC Australian International Education SWOT Digital Marketing Strategy
Strengths:
-Work rights and part time employment opportunities, especially Melbourne.
-Hopefully no further negative immigration and visa changes, and more focus upon student welfare
-Property markets softening with more plentiful and cheaper rentals.
Weaknesses:
-Lack of onshore industry practice regarding sustainable (digital) marketing strategies, majority of marketing funds directed toward "one shot" offshore physical events, neglecting remainder of the year.
-Offshore partner digital market development and "process" neither recognised nor acknowledged onshore (no feedback), still preference for conventional aforementioned promotions and sales targets.
-Knight student visa review yet to be finalised, with official and unofficial antipathy towards "foreigners".
-Restrictions on immigration, high fees and cost of living in Australia.
Opportunities:
-Inevitability of "outbound" physical sales and/or marketing channels being overtaken by more effective and economic "inbound" digital marketing, recruitment and support channels.
-Middle Eastern Airlines flying direct between Australia, European cities and accordingly promoting Australian destinations.
-Turkey: offshore programs, twinning & 2 + 2, project cooperation, teaching personnel etc. to meet growing demand, if effectively researched, established and managed, creating strong two way relationships with private institutions.
-Direct liaison with private university career/study advisory centres and private K12s, transfers from 2 year Turkish two year higher education diplomas to Australian degrees.
Threats:
-Continued weakness in European economies, employed mature candidates will not risk taking leave, many potential PR pathways closed, and widespread perception visas difficult, or visa applications rejected arbitrarily.
-Strength of AUD and other high profile markets e.g. U.K., Canada, U.S., and newer destinations.
-Offshore agents ceasing to market, promote and recruit for Australian institutions, and institutuon websites losing inbound links, thus decreasing Google Page Rank and virtual visibility in same markets.
-Prejudiced Australian lobbyists or preferred "experts" such as Dr. Bob Birrell of Monash University's CPUR who hold strong anti immigration attitudes while influencing policy makers and through the media, the Australian electorate, negatively.
Latest 2011 September Update:
Digital marketing offer for CEE, Turkey and UK stands, will maintain and improve Google PR and search engine indexing in these markets, in addition to physical liaison and "preferred partner" status.
For institutions marketing in Turkey, AIEC has compiled a directory career and study advisor centres in all private universities and K12s in Istanbul including dates of "internal" or "closed" career and study abroad fairs. AIEC now consults to Turkish partners and will be based in Turkey September through May liaising with private institutions, stakeholders and students throughout Turkey.
Digital or Online Marketing Strategy:
British Council Education Intelligence Unit report on international education marketing stressing importance of digital or virtual world and decline of physical marketing fields.
AIEC has received institutional feedback agreeing that internet, social media etc. are way ahead to market and recruit students, but why and how to do it? For the same reason one has a marketing strategy, to increase awareness and interest of your destination and institution, leading to decision and action (AIDA).
Results not only include a sustainable strategy, increased productivity, reach and analytics, but also an improved marketing skill set.

Digital Marketing Social Media Sells International Education
Social media sells education. THE explosion in internet access has transformed the 3.5 million strong market for international education according to a four year global research project by the British Council's Education Intelligence unit, published today exclusively by The Australian.
According to research manager Elizabeth Shepherd, “the evidence shows institutions that want to attract the best quality students must make information accessible in the easiest possible way and that means going the extra mile online.”
She says many are already on the march. According to the EI research; “in large part institutions' websites have now taken over the role of physical brochures as regards the details of courses and accommodation options. Online attendance at exhibitions is now competing with physically attending an expo as a means of meeting representatives in person to ask questions about overseas study aspirations.”
However Ms Shepherd warns many universities in major destination markets (although she declines to name any especially egregious examples) still look at their online presence, especially social-media, as add-ons, to complete after day jobs are done.
“ But social media is now a day job,” she says.
As to institutions that are getting it right she nominates the University of Auckland, for “a great online presence, mainly targeting China”. “They use a lot of rich media content with YouTube videos, blogs and chat functions and provide translations.
The EI survey of 127,000 students from 200 countries considering overseas study found that universities’ websites are the single most important source of information for students establishing a consideration set.
And as internet access expands so do expectations that information will be available in the local language, creating challenges for the five top providers (the US, UK, Australia, Germany and New Zealand) in servicing the largest markets. While 70 per cent of web pages are in English only 27 per cent of internet users are English speakers (followed by Mandarin at 23 per cent).....

Australia Skills Shortage Occupation Index
Economic uncertainty slows employers recruiting decisions, tightest in decade
Uncertainty about Australia’s current and future economic conditions and the resulting cautionary approach to recruitment decisions has seen the latest Clarius Skills Index reach the closest tension between supply and demand of skilled labour in a decade.
According to the June Quarter Clarius Skills Index, released today, supply and demand of skilled labour across 20 occupation categories was at a perfectly balanced 100.0, despite there being shortages in some trades occupations....
....Overall demand for skilled labour fell by 56,800 people (1.6 per cent) while supply fell 44,700 people (1.3 per cent).
This resulted in a net shortage of just 1,000 skilled people across all categories in the quarter compared with the March Index (100.3) which reported a shortfall of 11,000 skilled workers across all occupation categories.
Kym Quick, Chief Operating Officer of the Clarius Group, said it was evident from the Index and Clarius Group’s own experience that employers are erring on the side of conservatism....
Despite the softening of the market over the past quarter, a number of the skilled occupations covered in this report recorded skilled labour shortages, two of which are in the extreme range.
The occupations currently experiencing shortages of skilled labour are listed below:
Metal Tradespersons (108.9 – shortfall of 10,900, in Jun/Mar qtrs)
Chefs (105.3 – shortfall of 3,900 in the Jun qtr; 106.6 in the Mar qtr)
Automotive Tradespersons (103.8 – shortfall of 5,900 in the Jun qtr; 106.1 in the Dec qtr)
Wood Tradespersons (102.6 – shortfall of 900 in the Jun qtr; 103.2 in the Mar qtr) Food Tradespersons (101.8 – shortfall of 1,600 in the Jun qtr; 102.2 in the Mar qtr) Hairdressers (101.1 – shortfall of 500 in the Jun qtr; 101.6 in the Mar qtr) Computing Professionals (100.5 – shortfall of 1,100 n the Jun qtr; 101.1 in the Mar qtr)
Building and Engineering Professionals (100.3 – shortfall of 700 in the Jun qtr; 99.9 in the Mar qtr).

Australia International Student Visas Immigration Refugees
Related news from The Age, Melbourne:
Student visa applications on slide. OFFSHORE international student visa applications from India dropped almost 63 per cent in the last financial year, as applications fell by almost 20 per cent across the board, a federal government report shows.
The Immigration Department's quarterly report on the student visa program, released yesterday, shows the number of offshore applicants from India dropped from 18,514 in the 2009-10 financial year to just 6875 in the 2010-11 financial year.
Applications from China, Australia's largest source country for international students, dropped 24.3 per cent.
Melbourne University higher education expert Simon Marginson said the drop showed the sector was still a way off from a recovery. ''[There is] no sign that we have yet reached the bottom of the curve,'' he said.....
..... Tertiary Education Minister Chris Evans is in India this week for the inaugural meeting of the Australia-India Education Council.
He said the largest fall in Indian student numbers had been in vocational education, the sector that had been systematically rorted until changes to student visa rules last year.
''Quite frankly, that's a result of us tackling what were visa scams and poor-quality education providers operating for profit on migration outcomes rather than education outcomes,'' he told The Age in Delhi.
Senator Evans said in many cases a chain of migration agent, education college, and business owner had brought Indians to Australia to work, the students enrolled in a cooking or hairdressing course as a cover.....
Migrants roll up their sleeves. Most new arrivals have the drive and determination to make their own way....
....Some believe that refugees and migrants come to Australia without the will to work and contribute to Australian society. But research by my organisation, AMES, suggests this is far from the truth.
A three-year study of new arrivals who have attended AMES language programs found that 95 per cent of refugee and migrant survey respondents indicated an intention to work in Australia and almost all would study further to enhance their employment prospects.
Perhaps even more tellingly, the majority, even with significant job skills and tertiary qualifications like Katie, accepted that they needed to adjust their goals for working in Australia as they gradually made their way back into work of similar skill and status to that they may have previously enjoyed.
Focus group participants made clear their determination to stand on their own two feet. "I hope to find a job for my daily expenses, not to rely on Centrelink benefits and feel independent," a Vietnamese refugee told interviewers. "I am looking for any type of job so that I don't need to depend on Centrelink and clear my debts and be a self-sustainable person," a Burmese refugee explained.
Despite the obvious hurdles of lack of English language skills, lack of local work experience and, frequently, lack of recognition of overseas qualifications, over the three-year study period more than four in 10 of the research group found paid employment...
.... At a time of full employment, when many employers need both skilled and unskilled labour, results such as these are a reminder that the training, work experience and support that may be required to assist a new arrival into employment in Australia are a small price to pay for having job-ready employees with a terrific work ethic.
Two different perceptions with the latter being one of the few positive stories that seep into the mainstream media about "foreigners" which is generally precluded by Australia's negative socio political environment.
The former peddles same old prejudices i.e. private colleges, agents and Indian students bad, university and TAFE good. Of course universities and TAFEs would never aggressively promote study to PR in cooperation with education and migration agents, i.e. a system developed in Australia and managed by Australians? How is it that the media criticise neither Europeans doing the same supposed PR "rorting", nor Australians illegally working in the U.K. etc.? Australian universities never lobbied government and DIAC so that accounting remained on the SOL? Ironic that Australia sees itself as an egalitarian society yet according to the government VET education that trains people to fill skills shortages is of lesser social and economic value compared to university degrees e.g. B.A.? What should be a success story has been criticised or patronised constantly by Australia's middle aged Anglo Celtic political and media establishment (while unis and TAFE happy to divert attention away from there own similar activites)....but we are not racist because we have laws against it :)
